S.
Caterina, the well-known and charming area
which boasts the imposing panoramic backdrop of
Pizzo Tresero (3,594 mts.) and
Corno dei Tre Signori (3,360 mts.), is
situated on a flood plain where the Forni and Gavia
valleys converge.
The whole area is within the Stelvio National
Park where it is not difficult to meet
steinbocks, chamois, deer, roe-bucks, marmot colonies,
squirrels, badgers and stoats. Both the golden eagle,
symbol of the park, and the lammergeyer which has
been recently reintroduced, nest there.
 |
The
area is surrounded by the peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale
range covered by numerous glaciers, the most
important of which is that of Forni which
covering an area of 2,000 hectares is the
largest glacier in the Italian Alps.
If in the summer period it
is a favoured destination
- for excursionists and climbers from all
over the world attracted by the famous climbs
to Cevedale, Gran
Zebrù, Ortles,
S. Matteo etc., or more simply
for its nature walks on well marked paths
- for keen cyclists who discover from simple
itineraries by mountain bike to the opportunity
to face the steep climbs of the Giro d’Italia
over the Gavia, |
Mortirolo
and Stelvio Passes, in the winter
period it becomes a „White Heaven“:
the altitude of 1,700 metres above sea-level, the
fortunate geographical location and the careful
work of authorised people, guarantee the best snow-covering
of the Skiing Resorts in Lombardy.
From
November to the end of April one can ski at
S. Caterina on perfectly
prepared ski runs suitable for every type
of skier. You can dive down the slopes from
2,800 metres on Monte Sobretta
to 1,738 metres where you find the town with
its modern ski lifts to bring you back quickly
and comfortably to your original altitude.
For cross-country ski enthusiasts a splendid
track unwinds for fifteen kilometres through
thick coniferous woods with both tourist and
competitive tracks. Not only does
S. Caterina offer skiing, it also
offers ice-skating, night-time tobogganing,
skitouring, snowshoe excursions, and night-time
outings in the National Park.
